Castle Garden

If you're like me, once you started digging around for your family's roots, you quickly discovered that your people did NOT come thru Ellis Island.

Most Americans' forebears arrived before that immigrant processing center opened, or are recent arrivals, or are descended from Native tribes, or came in thru another port, or, or, or . . .

In fact, my mother's family is proud of the fact that her great-grandfather Bob Irving was the plumbing contractor at Ellis Island.

But, what most folks don't realize is that there was an earlier entry point for immigrants arriving in New York. It was called "Castle Garden."

Check out this web site and see if you can find one of your ancestors among the passenger lists:

Happy hunting!
