CSA film by Kevin Wilmott

There's a new indy film out there you may or may not want to catch. It's called "CSA," and was produced by an African-American film professor out in Kansas by the name of Kevin Wilmott.

Wilmott had a very interesting premise to work with: What if the South had won the Civil War?

And, he came up with some pretty interesting alternative history, such as the Stars and Bars being planted on the moon instead of the Stars and Stripes.

But, mostly, the film gets caught up in an indictment of white Southern culture after making the very stupid assumption that a Confederate victory would have perpetuated slavery. In my opinion, the "peculiar institution" was on its way out the door, it was just a matter of whose timetable was going to be used. The over-arching issue of the Civil War was NOT slavery, but the role of federalism.

Wilmott freely admits that he is a film professor, not a history professor. And, this film makes that fact glaringly obvious. But, I guess like most filmmakers, he had an agenda.

Anyway, good luck to David and Jessica today. I want to see some pictures of Costa Rica when you get back!
